Mobile money proved the demand. The next decade belongs to institutions that blend agency networks, instant payments and data into one seamless experience.
For most of the last fifteen years, the story of African digital finance has been told through mobile money. It is a remarkable story — but it is no longer the whole one. Banks, SACCOS and fintechs are now competing to deliver something more complete: full financial services, delivered close to the customer, settled in real time.
Distribution is the new product
Branches will always matter, but the institutions growing fastest are those that treat distribution as a platform. Agency banking turns trusted local businesses into service points, extending reach into districts where a branch would never be viable.
The winners will not be the institutions with the most branches, but the ones with the most dependable points of service.
What the infrastructure must do
- Settle transactions instantly and reconcile automatically
- Work reliably on intermittent connectivity
- Give compliance teams a complete, real-time audit trail
- Integrate cleanly with core banking and mobile money
None of this is glamorous, but all of it is decisive. The customer experience at the counter is only as good as the platform behind it.
Where to start
Institutions that move first tend to start small: a defined agent pilot, a clear set of services, and metrics agreed in advance. Done well, the pilot becomes the template for national scale.
